Cincy rallies in last inning to beat Vikings

SOUTH OTSELIC – Cincinnatus scored two runs in the top of the seventh to edge past OV Tuesday, the second straight contest the Vikes gave up the lead in the final inning.
Jacob Silverstein had the tying RBI basehit for the Red Lions in the seventh, and Tyler Kemak drove in the game-winner.
Down to the Vikings through four innings, Cincy jumped into the lead with a four-run fifth. OV committed three errors, and the visiting club added three hits to score its runs. “The damage to us really came in the fifth inning,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “Cincinnatus has struggled for a few years, but it was a really good game for them and they deserved the win.”
Chase Marston drove in two runs for OV (7-3), and Adam Duell had two hits.

NEW BERLIN – Oxford took the lead with three runs in the second inning, and pitcher Jackie Heggie finished the game with six straight scoreless innings.
Jackie Heggie plated Allie Nelson with the first run in the second to tie the game, and Julie Heggie added a two-run single later in the frame.
UV took a 2-1 lead in the first as Hannah Benson and Charlee Weidman had RBI hits.
Oxford finished with no errors in the game, and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh unscathed. “I would have to think this is one of Oxford’s better defensive games,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “Whenever we had runners on base, they also seemed to get the lead runner (out). We had good opportunities to score, but just didn’t come up with the big hit.”
Nelson had two hits and two runs scored for Oxford. Jackie Heggie and Alyshia Crawford finished with two hits as well.
UV (6-10) hosts Hancock today.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville won its third straight game Tuesday afternoon against Waterville, and is one victory from double-digit wins.
Megan Record had two doubles among her three hits and drove in two runs. Morgan Red added a two-run single in the fourth inning upping the lead to 7-0.
“We’ve had some major injuries this year, but we’ve brought up some kids to fill in, and they have stepped up their play,” said S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick.
Grace Dunshee, a freshman call-up to varsity last week, had two hits and one RBI. Brenda Hoefler and Lindsay Hodges also collected two hits apiece.
Hodges pitched 4 1-3 innings of no-hit ball and finished with a six-hitter striking out 10 and walking none.
S-E improved to 9-6 overall.

Cindy Slack had an RBI triple to score Leah Strong, Jessica Loomis drove in Slack, and Loomis made it a four-run lead scoring on an error.
Slack had a double and a triple, while also picking up the victory. Heather Eaton added two hits for the Vikings.

S-E girls defeat Canastota
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville recognized its seniors, and the girls picked up a 74-66 win over Canastota in the final home meet of the season.
Alysha Harlost, Lucy Campbell, Jasmine Huff, and Emily Wagner were seniors competing on the Marauders’ home surface for the last time this season. Campbell had four overall firsts winning the long jump and 200-meter dash, while also participating on two first-place relays. Harlost won the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, and Wagner ran a leg on the victorious 400-meter relay. Overall, the Marauders won nine events.
Canastota won all but one event to claim a 117-23 victory in the boys’ meet.
Logan Aikins tossed the shot put 42-6 for the lone S-E win. The Marauders compete in the Center State Conference championships May 20.
