BID holds Main Street Sweep on Saturday
NORWICH – The Norwich Business Improvement District will be holding its fourth annual downtown clean up day Saturday. The Main Street Sweep will begin at 8 a.m., and as always, volunteers are needed to help in the process.
BID Executive Director Pegi LoPresti explained the purpose of the Main Street Sweep is to do some spring cleaning in the downtown area. “We’ll be picking up trash, pulling weeds, washing windows in vacant store fronts and just generally sprucing up the downtown area,” LoPresti said.
Volunteers for the event will meet in the parking lot next to the Dollar Tree on South Broad in Norwich, where they will be split into groups and assigned work projects. “Our priority is North and South Broad Street and the main business districts first,” said LoPresti, “but our goal is to address the entire 12-block district. With enough volunteers, we will be able to do that.”
In past years, the Main Street Sweep has been held on a weekday, but since volunteer turnout has been low, LoPresti is hoping that by holding the event on Saturday, more community volunteers will be able to attend. “It’s a great opportunity for service organizations, school groups and people in the community who want to help clean up downtown,” she said. A group of volunteers from the Norwich Rotary will be attending this year’s event.
Volunteers will be asked to wear work clothes and bring a pair of work gloves, if possible. Cleaning supplies will be provided by the BID. The Main Street Sweep project is expected to be completed by 10 a.m.
Anyone interested in volunteering can contact LoPresti at the BID office at 336-1811 for more information; however, volunteers are welcome to just show up the day of the event.
“We hope to see people in the community coming out to help,” LoPresti said. The Main Street Sweep is help in mid-May to help prepare downtown Norwich for upcoming spring and summer events, including the BID’s annual pre-Memorial Day Cruise-In, which will be held on Friday, May 22.
