Ives Cream “cones and doggie bones”

NORWICH – This week downtown Norwich’s favorite ice cream parlor has gone to the dogs. Literally. Now through Saturday is SPCA Week at Ives Cream, 10 South Broad St. in Norwich.
According to owner Alex Ives, the event is designed to raise awareness for the animal shelter. “Most of us don’t realize the condition some of these pets come from,” he explained.
Pictures of animals awaiting adoption at the shelter are on every table in the South Broad Street ice cream parlor, and plenty of information about the non-profit agency is readily available.
The event will also raise money for the SPCA, with all tips from the week being donated to the organization. SPCA T-shirts will be available for sale throughout the week and Ives Cream is also accepting donations of “wish list” items on behalf of the shelter. Those items include dog and cat toys and chews and supplies such as clay cat litter, paper towels, beach and garbage bags. Copies of the wish list are available at the ice cream parlor.
And Ives isn’t stopping there. He is also offering an incentive to those who are interested in adopting an animal from the SPCA. “The next 50 people to adopt a dog or cat get a gift certificate for a free sundae,” he explained.
For Ives, the week long event is an opportunity to support a cause he feels strongly about. Earlier this year, he and his family adopted Sadie, a female Pomeranian puppy whose mother was one of the 76 dogs rescued in October. The Ives’ had fostered the pair after the puppy was born and when it came time for them to them to return to the SPCA, couldn’t bear to part with her. The mother was adopted by another family shortly after the pup was weaned, and Sadie is now a much loved, albeit high maintenance, member of the Ives clan.
SPCA Executive Director Carol Hedlund is excited about the event, the idea for which she credits entirely to Ives Cream.
“They are so good to us year round,” said Hedlund, who will make a special appearance at the ice cream parlor from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. And she’s bringing a four-legged friend: Zander, the SPCA’s pet therapy dog. The standard poodle, who is something of a local celebrity, will be available for photo opportunities.
SPCA Week at Ives Cream runs through Saturday, May 16. The ice cream parlor’s hours of operation are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 336-9393 or visit their website, www.ivescream.biz.
