Dollars for Scholars Week in Norwich
NORWICH – Fundraising efforts for the Norwich chapter of Dollars for Scholars are in full swing this week. The charitable organization, which raises scholarship money for college-bound Norwich High School students, will get a boost today from sales at Nina’s Restaurant, where 20 percent of the tab will be donated to the fund when patrons present a special coupon (on Page 3 of today’s Evening Sun).
For every car sold at Christman Motors this week (May 11-17), the dealership will donate $50 to the cause. On Sunday, the Canasawacta Country Club will support the drive by donating 25 percent of the greens fees for that day.
The big event for the week will come Saturday, when Dollars for Scholars hosts a number of fundraising activities in downtown Norwich’s East Side Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Brooks Barbecue Chicken from Oneonta will be on hand, cooking chicken halves on site for $6. Pre-sale and walk-up diners can pick up their barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. Other activities include a car wash, face painting and a golf ball drop.
“If you haven’t seen several hundred golf balls dropped from the fire department’s tallest ladder truck, it’s worth the trip. Of course, it’s even more interesting if you’ve purchased one of the $1 raffle tickets and your numbered ball falls closest to the target because you then win $250!,” said Norwich DFS President Pegi LoPresti.
This is the sixth year the Norwich DFS Chapter has presented a week of activities to the greater Norwich Community. The focus of these events is to further the fundraising efforts by the chapter towards scholarships for deserving students who reside in the City of Norwich School District. More than $75,000 in scholarships has been awarded to over 100 deserving students since Norwich Dollars for Scholars was formed seven years ago.
Direct donations to the scholarship fund are also accepted. Donations can be forwarded to Norwich Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 1015, Norwich, NY, 13815. For more information, call 336-4511.
