Norwich man killed in early morning motorcycle crash

NORWICH – A Town of Norwich man was killed in the City of Norwich early Monday morning when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck the Rexford Street Bridge spanning the Chenango River.
The driver, 42-year-old Daniel F. Banasiewicz of Pat Farley Road, suffered traumatic internal injuries and was pronounced dead at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Binghamton.
The Norwich City Police Department investigated the accident that occurred at around 1:25 a.m. along Rexford Street and reported that alcohol and excessive speeds were contributing factors.
“It was determined the motorcycle was east-bound on Rexford Street at a speed in excess of the posted 30 mph limit. That portion of roadway has a curve, and the cyclist lost control and struck the west end of the Rexford Street Bridge that spans the Chenango River,” said Norwich City Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Police said Banasiewicz was ejected from his 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle and struck the bridge’s guardrail.
Banasiewicz was treated for massive injuries at the scene by Norwich Fire Department paramedics and then transported to Wilson.
The Norwich PD was assisted by the New York State Police and Troopers from the Binghamton barracks assisted at Wilson Hospital.
