New Berlin comes together for youth and Milford Academy deal
NEW BERLIN – The Town and Village of New Berlin boards have worked out an agreement that will create new playing fields at Doc Meyer Park/Millbrook Reservoir and allow Milford Academy to build a high school football stadium.
The Town of New Berlin passed a resolution May 11 approving the development of several new sporting fields at the town park.
The move created an alternative location for the Unadilla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball Association to hold future games.
Currently, the league plays at Fish Field in the village and shares the site with Milford Academy. The arrangement had caused some obstacles in the preparatory school’s plans to purchase the site from the village. The school wants to buy the property in order to build a high school football stadium on the site.
“The concerns facing the Fish Field arrangement have now been put at ease,” said New Berlin Mayor Wade Schrag.
“I think that the youth baseball is definitely going to have a quality area to play on and Milford will have the land it needs to run the prep school,” said Village Trustee Terry Potter. Potter worked closely with the school’s director Bill Chaplick in securing the final arrangement.
“It’s just great that everyone really came together and recognized what was really best for New Berlin. We had a community concern and now we have a solution that’s in the best interest of not just Mr. Chaplick and the little league, but for the community as a whole,” said Potter.
“We have been working with the village to finding a solution, not just to the village’s issue, but a New Berlin issue. We appreciate the worth of Milford Academy and the importance of creating a venue for our youth programs. We’re glad we could find a solution that satisfied all the parties and the community,” said Town of New Berlin Supervisor Ross Iannello.
Town Councilwoman Halys Davis commended the efforts of the supervisor and fellow board members.
“Ross Iannello has done a great job in setting that up. They’re going to start working on it soon, maybe in the next few months, but it’ll be more than a year before work is complete. Milford has agreed to allow the little league use of their fields until the project at Millbrook is completed,” said Davis.
Davis also said the board believed that keeping Milford Academy in New Berlin was beneficial to the town.
“I’m thrilled we’ll be keep Milford here. We are giving Milford a home and they are giving New Berlin a name in the national community as the number two prep school in the nation,” she said.
On May 12, the village board approved a second resolution over the sale because of an adjustment in the property lines being sold to the school and passed the new measure anonymously.
The resolution echoed the details of the prior agreement and sold the property of Fish Field to Milford Academy for $4,600 an acre for roughly 10 acres of land. The motion was moved by Potter and seconded by Michael Conroe.
The measure will now go to the state legislature for final approval.
