Local GM franchises appear safe
NORWICH – Chenango County’s General Motors dealers said they have not been notified of any changes in their franchise agreements.
GM announced plans to cut 1,100 of its dealers Friday, but did not release a list, leaving it up to individual dealers to release the information. Contacted by The Evening Sun over the weekend, none reported hearing of any immediate changes.
The area’s four GM dealers include Benedict Corporation and Christman Motors in Norwich, McCredy Motors in Sherburne and Scoville-Meno in Bainbridge.
Steve Scoville, president of the Scoville-Meno Family of Dealerships, has announced the retention of the automotive group’s GM and Chrysler franchises as part of each manufacturer’s plans for the future.
Scoville-Meno is so far the only local dealer to issue an official media statement.
“As we approach our June anniversary of all these locations, including Scoville-Meno Honda in Oneonta, we’re reminded that our professionalism and dedication to our customers has not been overlooked by those seeking to create a new era in the U.S. automotive industry,” said Scoville. “We truly thank all our sales, service, parts, and body shop customers, who through their loyal patronage have made our longevity and success a reality over the past three decades.”
The Scoville-Meno Family of Dealerships includes five area dealerships. Scoville-Meno Auto Plaza in Owego, a GM dealership; Scoville-Meno Chevrolet-Pontiac-GMC, in Bainbridge; Scoville-Meno Honda in Oneonta; and Scoville-Meno Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep dealerships in Sayre, Pa. and Sidney.
After Chrysler’s decision last Thursday to eliminate a quarter of its own, about 1,100 GM dealerships learned in a matter of 48 hours Friday that they would be forced either to sell fewer brands or close altogether. Chenango’s sole Chrysler dealership, Norwich Dodge Chrysler Jeep, was not affected.
The GM dealerships will be eliminated when their contracts end late next year.
