Non-profit organizations celebrate Community Day in the Park Saturday

NORWICH – A showcase of Chenango County’s non-profit and charity organizations will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in East Park in downtown Norwich on Saturday.
“I wanted to be able to have an event where we could bring all of these groups together,” said organizer Scott Sutton. The goal of the event is to promote the organizations and to provide education about what each of the organizations do. “My goal was to bring these organizations together and to let the public know who they are and what they do in a community fair type atmosphere,” Sutton said.
The idea for the event was conceived when the Norwich Business Improvement District and the Friends of the Park sent a letter to community members asking if anyone had an idea for an event to be held in the park the day after the BID’s Annual Dinner. On Friday night, the BID and the Friends of the Park will hold their annual fundraiser and dinner, but BID Executive Director Pegi LoPresti explained she wanted to find an event or organization to utilize the tent rented for the event throughout the weekend.
“My wife Sharon came up with the idea,” Sutton said. “She said we should have a community fair. The idea has grown since then.”
LoPresti said the BID liked Sutton’s idea, but could not organize another event, so Sutton stepped up to the plate and took on the lead role.
So far, over 40 exhibitors will take part Saturday. “We had to stop at 40,” Sutton said, explaining that response to the event has been greater than expected.
“Non-profit agencies are always looking for a way to get the information out about who they are and what they do,” LoPresti said, explaining the response to the fair.
Raffle prizes will be distributed throughout the day, including two grand prizes donated by local businesses. Adventure Bikes and Boards, the newest business to enter downtown Norwich, has donated a Trek Mountain Bike, and Protel has donated over $300 worth of camping gear.
Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each, and numbers will be drawn throughout the day for different prizes. So far, over 50 different prizes have been donated. The grand prize winners will be drawn at 2 p.m. Children in attendance will have the opportunity to collect passport stamps for different exhibitors. If they receive stamps from all the exhibitors, they can hand in their passport for free raffle tickets. Participants must be present to win.
Sutton said what makes the event so incredible is that it was put together with no budget. “Everything has been done through donations and volunteers,” Sutton said. In addition to the non-profit organizations that will be represented, local celebrities will be in attendance, popcorn, cotton candy and free ice cream samples provided by Schwan’s will be available. An art project table will be available for children and the Northeast Classic Car Museum will have some vehicles on display, weather permitting.
The event will be free to the public. “I hope to see everyone there,” Sutton said.
