Hoffman appointed as Guilford Town Clerk

GUILFORD – Long-time Guilford resident Gail Hoffman has been appointed town clerk to serve out the remainder of the term in the position from which Barbara Strier has resigned.
Hoffman, who has lived in the town for most of her life, has more than 20 years of experience in accounting. She served for 18 years as assistant comptroller of Sidney Hospital before leaving that organization to join the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce as finance director. In 2007, she left that position to start her own business, GH Accounting, which she operates out of her Guilford home.
Hoffman was selected as Strier’s replacement by the town board in December, shortly after the town clerk announced she would be leaving her position for an opening in the Chenango County Treasurer’s Office. Hoffman was appointed as deputy town clerk on December 10 and, for the past five months, has worked alongside her predecessor to learn the duties of the position.
“The training time with Barb has been a great help,” Hoffman said. “It doesn’t happen often that you have that opportunity. Barb has gone above and beyond to make this as seamless as possible.” According to Hoffman, she has also had the support of Guilford residents and the town board.
“From my observations of Gail, she handles the job very well,” said Town Supervisor Al Doyle. He is sorry to see Strier go, the supervisor said, but he is pleased with the changeover.
Although Hoffman is a Guilford native, since her appointment as deputy clerk, she has found that there is still much to learn about her hometown.
“I’ve been surprised at how many people I didn’t know,” she explained. The public interaction involved with the job is one of the things Hoffman said she likes most about her new position. It is a nice change, she said, from dealing primarily with numbers.
One of Hoffman’s first tasks in office will be to coordinate the move from the town’s current facility to the new Town Hall. She said it could take place as early as July 1. The Guilford resident will serve out the remainder of Strier’s term in office, due to expire on Dec. 31. She is already planning to run for the town clerk position this fall, so that she may continue in the position.
Hoffman can be reached at the Town Hall at 895-9966, or via email at guilfordtownclerk@gmail.com. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
