HANCOCK – G-MU avenged a loss to the last team to defeat it, and moved into the Section IV, Class D semifinals with a victory at Hancock Saturday.
Nate Sloan’s two-run homer in the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie. G-MU tacked on four more in the fifth highlighted by Andrew Delmar’s two-run single to score Cody Hall and Tyler Wildfeir. “We’ve avenged two of our three losses, and we hope to get a chance to avenge the third (against Afton), or at least have a chance to play for a championship,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “We’re playing in June, and that’s what we were hoping for.”
Hall and Wildfeir hit back-to-back doubles in the opening inning, and Delmar followed with an RBI single putting the Raiders in front early
Hall had three hits in the game, and pitched a complete-game victory. Wildfeir added two hits, and Delmar drove in four runs.
The Raiders (18-3), winners of 10 straight games, play at top-seeded South Kortright on Tuesday. G-MU has beaten the Rams the last two meetings in previous seasons. “They won a sectional soccer title and a state title in basketball this year, so we know they have some good kids over there,” Johnson said. “It should be a good one.”

Afton 11, Deposit 4
AFTON – Afton (16-5) capitalized on a Deposit fielding mishap in the opening inning, and played with the lead the rest of the way to advance to the Section IV, Class D semifinals Tuesday at Jefferson.
Jacob Arnold hit a two-out pop-up to the infield with a pair of Afton runners aboard. The ball fell without a Deposit player touching the ball to score the tying and go-ahead runs in the opening inning. Two batters later Mike Muller connected on a two-run double upping the lead to 4-1.
“We went from scoring no runs to four runs in a heartbeat,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “From there, we hit the ball hard.”
Adam Rupakus went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and Victor Coronado had two hits and single ribbie.
Casey Mohrein went the distance for the victory striking out nine, and the Crimson Knights did not commit an error. “Defensively we’re at 100 percent, and our bats have really come around,” Rapp said.

Maine-Endwell 4, Norwich 2
ENDWELL – Norwich (7-10) gave defending Class A state champion Maine-Endwell all it could handle Saturday before succumbing in the Section IV playoffs.
Ryan Jones’ two-run single in the bottom of the third gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead, and those two insurance runs were the final margin of victory.
Norwich cut the M-E lead in half in the top of the fourth. Mike Moon hit an RBI single to score Christian Hotaling, and Moon came in on a passed ball. Moon finished 2-for-3, and Josh Borfitz had two doubles for the Tornado.
Norwich pitcher Timmy Clark was the hard-luck loser. He allowed just four hits to the Spartans, the number one seed in the section. “It was a close game with good pitching on both teams’ part,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We gave them a run for their money, unfortunately we came up on the short end.”

Oxford 7, Groton 2
GROTON – Coming in as the underdog, Oxford played from the front at the outset, and knocked off higher-seeded Groton on the road Friday afternoon.
Julie Heggie went 4-for-4 with two RBI, and Marlena Frank’s RBI triple in the seventh had the Blackhawks (7-11) firmly in control.
“We’ve been more consistent and we have been more positive,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We were aggressive on the bases and made them make mistakes.”
Alyshia Crawford and had two hits and two runs, and Jackie Heggie added a 2-for-4 day at the plate to support her own pitching effort.
Jackie Heggie allowed just five hits striking out five and walking three. The Blackhawks play Greene on Tuesday.

CHENANGO BRIDGE – B-G ended Greene’s 15-game winning streak three weeks ago, but the Trojans were able to avenge that defeat at the right time advancing in the Class C playoffs Saturday.
Rebecca Hanrahan allowed just three hits and struck out 11 for her 15th victory on the season. She also had two hits, two runs, and drove in a run. “Our defense made some key plays when we needed them, and we were aggressive running the bases,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.
Greene upped its lead to five runs in the fourth, the highlight a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt by Alyssa David to score Megan McDermott.
Greene plays Oxford Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the BAGSAI softball complex.

Track and Field
Harlost wins Class A pentathlon title
Sherburne-Earlville senior, Alysha Harlost, broke the school record in the pentathlon, and won the Marauders’ lone Section III title last Thursday.
The Marauders moved from Class B to Class A after adding two Hamilton girls to the roster this season. Nonetheless, the 2,315 points for Harlost were not only good enough to finish in first place, but broke the school record set by Kylie Davis (Brown), who also happens to be Harlost’s varsity coach. “It was such an honor to be part of the experience and see the pride in Alysha’s accomplishments,” Davis said. “She has been making gains all season. She put in some extra time to improve herself as an athlete, and it paid off.”
Emily Truett, Stephanie Staley, Catherine Eddy, and Sofeia Eddy qualified for sectionals in the 3,200-meter relay, and placed seventh with a season-best time of 10:53.79. Eddy also ran a personal-best in the 3,000 meters timing a 11:48.97.
Trio of second-place finishes for Norwich
OWEGO – Norwich had three second-place finishes at the Section IV Class B meet Thursday, and 11 overall top-six finishes.
Sarah Bonnell had a hand in two of the three runner-up finishes placing second in the 100-meter dash (13.47) and long jump (16-7 1/2).
Mike Reilly, a junior, was second in the 110-meter hurdles timing a 16.86.
