Early offense lifts Greene over Oxford

Evening Sun Report

Softball

Greene 3, Oxford 1
BINGHAMTON – Greene did all of its damage in the first two innings, and if not for some outstanding defense by Oxford, would have likely cruised to a more comfortable victory in Tuesday’s Section IV, Class C playoff game at the BAGSAI Complex.
Rebecca Hanrahan doubled in the first inning to score Erin Smith, and a Hanrahan two-run single in the second inning plated Haley MacLaren and Smith. Earlier in the second inning, Oxford shortstop Alyshia Crawford flagged an infield grounder deflected by pitcher Jackie Heggie, and threw to catcher Julie Heggie, who tagged out Greene baserunner Amy David.
Crawford also jumped to snag a line drive for an out, and hit Julie Heggie with a strike from second base in the fifth inning cutting down Greene’s Tara Bub for the third out of that inning.
“I bet (Crawford) probably saved them at least three runs,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We hit the ball well, they just made the plays. I saw how (Oxford) played at the end of the season, and I knew this would be a tough game.”
Oxford (7-12) had few baserunners – and just three total hits – against Hanrahan. Crawford had a single in the fourth, the first hit of the game for her team, moved to third after a fielder’s choice and stolen base, and scored on Jackie Heggie’s groundout.
Hanrahan had 13 strikeouts and two walks for her 16th win of the season.
“We gave ourselves a chance to win in this game, we just didn’t come up with big hits when we had runners on base,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We’ve improved a lot since the first time we played them. The first time, they 15-runned us. Today, it was a two-run game.”
Hanrahan was a perfect 3-for-3, and Smith went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Greene (17-4) plays at top-seeded Elmira Notre Dame Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

South Kortright 8, G-MU 5
SOUTH KORTRIGHT – Another last-inning rally was not in the cards for G-MU (18-4), who finished Tuesday’s game with the bases-loaded in the Section IV, Class D semifinals.
The final out was somewhat anti-climactic as a G-MU baserunner collided with a Rams player attempting to field the ball. The umpire correctly called baserunner’s interference for the final out.
“We had our chances, they are just a solid team and were the better team today,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Both teams had 10 hits, but they took advantage of theirs and we didn’t get big hits at the right time.”
Eric Burns’ three-run homer in the first inning staked South Kortright to the early lead. Burns finished 3-for-3 on the day. Three more runs came in the third with two G-MU errors, and a Ryan Darosky RBI double moving South Kortright in front, 7-2.
Nate Sloan, Cody Hall, and Demario Reed all had two hits apiece for G-MU. “We lost to a good team and a classy bunch of kids,” Johnson said.
