Accused Edmeston robber walked out of bank with $6,500
EDMESTON –After passing a note to the teller, police say the man charged with robbing the NBT in Edmeston walked out with about $6,500 in cash.
“According to the police reports, it looks like the defendant left the location with approximately $6,500 in cash,” said Otsego County District Attorney John M. Muehl Wednesday.
The defendant, 38-year-old David A. Lolik of Edmeston, turned himself into police May 31 after state police released his photograph and officially declared him a person of interest in the case.
He is charged with third degree robbery, a Class D felony carrying a maximum sentence of up to seven years in state prison. He has pleaded not guilty and waived his right to a felony in Town of Edmeston court yesterday. He is currently represented by Attorney James P. Ferrari of the Otsego County Public Defender’s Office.
Lolik remains incarcerated at the Otsego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.
Muehl said the case would come before an Otsego County grand jury later in June.
“At this time the third degree robbery charge, which is a felony level charge, is likely to be the only charge filed against the defendant,” he said.
The DA said the case was a “straight up example of a third degree robbery,” noting no weapon was used and that there “was not an issue of proof” in regards to the evidence against Lolik.
State Police have said a number of witnesses saw the defendant during the robbery and that he was caught on surveillance tapes. Muehl said one of the witnesses in the case recognized the defendant during the robbery and later identified him to police. He also said a taxi driver was a potential witness, but did not elaborate on his role in the investigation. It was not clear if police had recovered any of the stolen cash.
On May 19, Lolik allegedly walked into the NBT Bank branch on West Street in Edmeston and passed a note to the teller demanding she hand over an undisclosed amount of money. Police said no weapons were displayed during the robbery.
NBT Bancorp Inc.,was offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the apprehension, arrest and conviction of any individual responsible for committing the robbery. It was not confirmed by press time Thursday if any individual would be collecting any of that reward.
