Bricks and Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Chenango County Public Works Department:
• Road crews have been busy chip sealing 17 miles of county Rts. 37, 29 and 9. The remaining work, 13 miles, is planned for Rt. 27 toward Coventryville and a section of Rt. 2.
• Workers will construct a new Hogsback Road bridge this week. A detour is already in place.
• Many roads are being routinely striped and workers are replacing culverts as necessary.
Employment stats:
• The Chenango County Office of Employment and Training reported an 8.6 percent unemployment rate in April. The figure was 10.1 percent in March, and compares to a 6.2 percent unemployment rate in April of 2008. More workers found seasonal jobs such as in the leisure and hospitality industries.
• Of the five surrounding counties, only Cortland, at 8.9 percent unemployment, has a higher rate than Chenango County’s.
Leigh Baldwin & Associates, LLC:
• The sheet rock is up and floors are installed at the stock brokerage office located in the carriage barn behind the Manley House on Broad Street in Norwich.
• The project was begun in October. Workers plan to begin painting the interior and exterior this week.
Oxford Memorial Library expansion project:
• Framing for the walls of the Oxford Memorial Library are up.
• Patrons are asked to use the front door while the rear entryway steps are rebuilt.
West Park Place offices:
• Contractors are making steady progress on transforming the former Chenango County Jail and Sheriff’s Office into a new West Park Place office complex for government use. The two buildings, slated to be completed in the fall, will eventually house divisions of the Department of Social Services.
• Workers were sandblasting exterior bricks last week and pouring foundations for the front porches, columns and rear elevator shaft.
• Electrical work in the server room and elsewhere is expected to be completed next week.
• Project liaison for the county, Linda E. Natoli, said door frames are being cut, some ceilings are going in and windows are anticipated in mid July.
• Officials will be touring the work site this week.
