Safe Summer Fun kicks off in Norwich Friday
NORWICH – For two decades, Norwich children and their parents have kicked off summer with safety in mind.
This Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Kurt Beyer Park, Chenango County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, along with The Place and several other community agencies, will be holding the 20th annual Safe Summer Fun Day.
“All the kids are now just getting out of school and basically what we’re trying to do is kick off the summer in a safe way, to remind them to make good choices over their vacation,” said Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor Kevin Nial.
The family-oriented event is sponsored by approximately 30 local businesses, government agencies and student organizations.
“Although we target the program at the youth, everyone can attend and benefit from the activities being offered. You’re never too old for safety and parents play a key role in helping their children make good decisions,” said Heidi Foster, Service Learning Program director at The Place.
Foster had three AmeriCorps members working for her plan and organize the event – Sherry Backman, Mallory Johnson and Brittany Cargill. All three are working towards degrees at SUNY Morrisville and began planning for the event in May.
The Norwich Police Department will be on hand to inspect and register any bikes, along with other safety equipment. There will also be a bike rodeo, obstacle safety course and a raffle for a free mountain bike and helmet.
There will also be a DJ, free food, drinks and ice cream, an inflatable obstacle course and a fire safety puppet show put on by the Norwich Fire Department. A mock camp site has been constructed and will feature a camping safety presentation.
The Sheriff’s office will be creating identification cards for kids at the event. The cards are the equivalent of a photo-ID and the information gathered, including fingerprints, height, weight and more are used by law enforcement to locate a lost child in case of an emergency.
Several local businesses have also donated door prizes and gifts to be given out at the event. Foster said around 500 people attended last year’s event and organizers are planning for a similar turnout.
Attendees will be able to get information on a number of other summer activities at the event.
