Parolee wanted for a violent crime is allegedly caught attempting a second one
NORWICH – Since March the Norwich Police Department had been searching for a man out on parole who was wanted for allegedly entering a home in the City of Norwich, uninvited, and assaulting a female victim, three days after police responded to a domestic dispute between the two.
Steven A. Shanholtzer, 26, was arrested by the Village of Herkimer Police Department March 19 after he allegedly mugged a victim at around midnight. Following his arrested officers at the department reported that Shanholtzer refused to cooperate with his processing and attempted to mislead police about his identity.
The Herkimer Police charged him with second degree robbery, third degree assault, obstructing government administration, false impersonation, resisting arrest and petit larceny.
What the department didn’t know at the time was that Shanholtzer was on the run from the Norwich City Police Department and the New York State Division of Parole for a violent felony he had allegedly committed just four days earlier.
The Norwich PD requested a warrant for Shanholtzer’s arrest after responding to a incident at 1 a.m. March 15 in the City of Norwich.
A female victim contacted police claiming the defendant entered her home uninvited and attacked her, causing injury. The Norwich PD did not release the extent of the woman’s injuries but said they were enough to justify a charge of first degree assault, a felony. Shanholtzer was also charged with another felony, second degree burglary and harassment over the incident.
Police said in a statement issued Thursday that Shanholtzer was still on parole for a prior felony conviction and had a relationship with the female victim. Police also said they had visited the same residence March 12, three days earlier over a domestic dispute between the two and that officers had previously warned Shanholtzer over his conduct.
Police Chief Joseph Angelino said Shanholtzer would eventually be extradited to Chenango County to face the charges.
Shanholtzer is currently in the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000 cash bail. Even if he makes bail he will remain incarcerated however because of a standing parole violation.
