New volunteers join the Hospice ranks

NORWICH – The Hospice staff ranks have grown recently by nine volunteers. While they are not paid for their service to patients, they are without exception special people who wish to give back to their communities. Folks from South Otselic to Greene to New Berlin prepared for their role by taking classes in April and May. Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Judie Wright was pleased that four of the new volunteers are men. “We have a lot of male patients and in order to make the best match between patient and volunteer, we needed more men willing to face the topic of death and dying, and devote themselves to helping out whenever and wherever they can.”
Each new volunteer had been touched by Hospice in one way or another. In Cindy Lum’s case we took care of her husband who suffered from ALS. Also, Richard Tosh’s wife was a local Hospice patient. The Hilgerts, new to the area, are a couple who decided that in their retirement they had enough time and compassion to share with others. The Hilgerts were familiar with Hospice services because a family member downstate used Hospice services.
Patient and family volunteers become close to a Hospice family. They often sit with the patient when a caregiver needs to be away from the home. They provide companionship and may assist in small tasks around the house. For example, a veteran volunteer, Celine Gagne visits her 90-year-old patient a couple of times of week to vacuum, do dishes, and a small load of laundry. The two women have forged a close bond.
Individuals who would like to help Hospice, but don’t feel ready to visit patients, can offer assistance in and around the office. Administrative and maintenance volunteers spend their time in the office answering phones, making copies, or assisting with mailings; while maintenance volunteers complete small fix-it jobs needed in to keep the building in tip top shape. Both administrative and maintenance volunteers save Hospice money that in turn goes toward patient care. These volunteers need only take a two-hour training that aquatints them with the mission and execution of Hospice services.
If you are interested in volunteering your time and talents to Hospice in any of capacity call Judie Wright at the Hospice office at 334-3556 so she can set up a brief interview.
