Faux cows draw attention on West Hill

NORWICH – They may be lifelike down to the single hairs on their clear black and white hides, but William H. Smith Jr.’s newest lawn ornaments aren’t really eating the lush, green grass.
“I wouldn’t want to spoil them,” he said.
West Hill motorists have become used to seeing the magnificent family of Holsteins gathered and thriving by the former Norwich Ford dealer’s fence by now. You can’t miss them.
Smith said the statues are actually larger than live cows so as to make the static display look real. Though he regulary creates his own objets d’art, and has several on the hillside across Rt. 10A from his home, Smith said a British artist designed the herd and a Phillipine company fabricated them.
They remind him of years ago when his farming neighbor used to keep cows in the pasture next to his house.
“I missed my house guests,” he said.
