Two area schools provide free meals for kids this summer

CHENANGO COUNTY – Two local school districts will do their part to help keep kids from going hungry this summer by offering free, nutritious meals to any child under the age of 18.
Both the Oxford Academy and Norwich City School Districts will provide the free meals, which are made possible with federal funding through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.
According to the USDA website, the program is designed to pick up where the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs leave off in order to ensure that children in the local community don’t go hungry during the summer months.
All children up to the age of 18 are eligible for the free meals, regardless of whether they are currently enrolled in the district, explained Norwich School Lunch Director Jackie Jenks. The district doesn’t receive any funding for adult meals, she said, but parents who wish to eat with their child may purchase a meal.
According to Jenks, Norwich has participated in the Summer Food Service Program for at least 15 years. Last summer, they served approximately 120 lunches each day, but Jenks said she believes they could see larger numbers this year because of a greater need in the community.
“I’d like to think we could meet more needs,” she said.
Parents do not need to register or apply for the program in advance. “Just come and eat,” said Oxford’s Food Service Manager, Liz O’Rourke.
According to O’Rourke, this is the fourth year Oxford has participated in the program. Last summer, she said, the district served an average of 50 breakfasts and 100 lunches per day. She, too, is anticipating a higher response this year.
“I think there is a need, and maybe we will see more,” she said.
In Oxford, breakfast and lunch will be offered from Monday through Thursday each week beginning July 6 and concluding July 30. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Oxford High School Cafeteria. For more information, contact the district at 843-2025.
In Norwich, meals will be offered Monday through Friday, from July 6 through Aug.7 in the Stanford Gibson Cafeteria. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and lunch from 11:10 a.m. until noon.
