Oxford resident holds Second Annual Ride for Diabetes Aug. 1

OXFORD – Two years after losing her daughter to diabetes, Oxford resident Nancy Peterson is working to keep other families from going through the same ordeal. On Aug. 1, the second annual Ride for Diabetes will be held, and all proceeds will go to support the American Diabetes Association.
In March of 2007, Peterson lost her daughter Heidee to diabetes. Diagnosed at the age of two, Heidee battled diabetes for 28 years before dying of complications from the disease. “Although it’s too late for Heidee, there are many out there who are still suffering,” Peterson said.
Peterson’s son Shane Wilcox came up with the idea to do something in Heidee’s memory, and because she had always enjoyed motorcycles, the idea of an annual memorial bike run was discussed. Heidee left behind one child, and according to her grandmother Elaine Daily, the annual bike run helps keep Heidee’s memory alive for her son.
“Last year, we raised over $1,600, and it was our first year, so we thought it went really well. We had 40 registered bikers and we picked up some along the route,” Peterson said. This year, Peterson is hoping to top last year’s numbers. “It was a lot of fun last year, and we’re looking forward to this year,” she said.
This year’s route will begin from 10 to 11 a.m. with registration in the park in Oxford. The cost of registration will be $15 per person or $25 for double riders. Participants will travel to Gilligan’s Island in Sherburne, the Georgetown Inn in Georgetown, and Dave’s Dairy Treat in Cincinnatus before traveling along Route 26 to Whitney Point, back to Smithville Flats and then into McDonough, making their final stop at the Balsam Inn in East Pharsalia. The registration fee will include a barbecue lunch and a dice roll.
At The Balsam, biker games will be held. Trophies will be available for the first and second place winners in each competition. Games will include a slow ride, a keg roll and an egg drop contest.
In addition, there will be several raffle contests. A 50/50 raffle will be held, as well as raffles for several donated items. Peterson said she has sent out more than 200 letters requesting donations from different businesses and organizations. Anyone wishing to donate an item, should contact Peterson for more information. Tickets for the 50/50 raffle are available now at several area business or through Peterson or Wilcox.
Peterson explained that statistics on diabetes show that more and more young people are being diagnosed with the disease. The money raised at the event will be used mostly for research towards finding a cure for diabetes. When Heidee was sick, Peterson explained there were times when the ADA provided financial assistance to help get Heidee to treatments. “I felt I wanted to do something to give back in some way.”
For more information about the ride or to purchase 50/50 tickets, call Peterson at 647-5015 or 244-9449 or Wilcox at 316-5969.
