Camp Thompson opens for 41st year
SMYRNA – Now that the school year has officially ended, the summer camp season will begin, and the Norwich Family YMCA wants to remind families of the opportunities available at their Camp Thompson facility in Smyrna.
YMCAs across the country have been providing summer camps for more than 150 years, and the Norwich YMCA has been operating Camp Thompson for 41.
“Children are our greatest treasures and our greatest responsibility,” said YMCA Senior Program Director Tom Revoir. “YMCA camps help kids have fun, grow positively, meet healthy role models and learn good values. We not only provide good memories that last a lifetime, but we also assure parents that their kids are in good hands.”
The YMCA offers a variety of programs at the Camp Thompson facility. The most popular program, day camp for youth, runs daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The day camp program is open to children from kindergarten through fifth grade. According to a press release distributed by the Y, the program provides children with the opportunity to connect with their peers and their community. Children in the program can participate in activities such as canoeing, hiking, crafts, sports, swimming and adventure-based programs.
While the program is offered five days a week, running from June 29 through Aug. 21, parents may enroll their child for as many or few days a week as needed. Children are divided into age appropriate groups. “YMCA programs are designed to meet the needs and schedules of today’s busy families,” Revoir said.
Teen camp is also available for students in sixth through twelfth grade.
Children must register at least one day in advance. Registration information can be found at the YMCA web site, www.norwichymca.com, or by visiting the Y.
Camp Thompson is a 200-acre camping facility, located in Smyrna. The camp features a private lake, a lodge with kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities, several sleeping cabins, a pavilion, shower house, playground, boathouse and more.
While the camp provides fun activities for kids, it also provides a source of healthy activity, something that is increasingly important as childhood obesity rates continue to increase. “The need is as strong today as ever before,” said YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen in a press release. “More physical activity through play helps children better manage stress, succeed in school, reduce stress, build energy and, most of all, learn skills that encourage a lifetime of activity.”
This summer, the Norwich YMCA will offer a variety of camping and summer activities. For more information on this or any YMCA program call 336-9622 or visit the web site at www.norwichymca.org.
