YMCA rolls out new program to help unemployed members

NORWICH – As more and more companies are making staffing cuts in order to stay afloat during this difficult economic time, the YMCA is trying to ensure that those who lose their jobs have one less thing to worry about.

The Y recently rolled out a new program that would allow members who lose their jobs to keep their membership until they can get back on their feet. “This is a huge new program, that ranks right up there with our Open Doors scholarship program,” said YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen.

The unemployment membership program was recently instituted in Norwich to help those who lose their jobs. Current YMCA members who lose their jobs can apply to be part of the program, which allows them a three-month membership at no charge. Non-members can receive a one month membership at no charge.

Mullen explained that the YMCA’s mission is to provide access to programs and services for the benefit of the community. “The YMCA mission is never in recession. It is what it is, no matter what,” he said.

According to YMCA Board Member and Membership Committee Chair Kim Perez, the board was excited about the program from the minute they heard about it. “It is the mission of the YMCA to reach out to our community, especially in times of need. The board feels that the Unemployment Membership Program can help to build a foundation for a stronger community.”
