YMCA rolls out new program to help unemployed members
NORWICH – As more and more companies are making staffing cuts in order to stay afloat during this difficult economic time, the YMCA is trying to ensure that those who lose their jobs have one less thing to worry about.
The Y recently rolled out a new program that would allow members who lose their jobs to keep their membership until they can get back on their feet. “This is a huge new program, that ranks right up there with our Open Doors scholarship program,” said YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen.
The unemployment membership program was recently instituted in Norwich to help those who lose their jobs. Current YMCA members who lose their jobs can apply to be part of the program, which allows them a three-month membership at no charge. Non-members can receive a one month membership at no charge.
Mullen explained that the YMCA’s mission is to provide access to programs and services for the benefit of the community. “The YMCA mission is never in recession. It is what it is, no matter what,” he said.
According to YMCA Board Member and Membership Committee Chair Kim Perez, the board was excited about the program from the minute they heard about it. “It is the mission of the YMCA to reach out to our community, especially in times of need. The board feels that the Unemployment Membership Program can help to build a foundation for a stronger community.”
Mullen explained that in the past, the Y has taken steps to help the community in difficult times, regardless of financial hardships. In the 1900s the YMCA raised money for the war effort and went to the front lines to help feed soldiers. “The concern was never money, just doing what needed to be done,” Mullen said. The director said he sees this program as an homage to those efforts. “Today people are losing their jobs, and they don’t know where to turn.”
While the Norwich YMCA is not the first to initiate this program, they are among only a few that have. Individuals who are interested in the program can receive materials at the front desk. They will be asked to complete a basic form, which will be kept confidential. Unemployment documentation will need to be provided with the completed application. Once submitted, individuals applications will be evaluated by Mullen and individuals will be asked to come in for a private appointment.
While there is no way to tell how many people may take advantage of the program, Mullen said a number of individuals who canceled their memberships this year listed unemployment or a decrease in family income as the reason.
Other programs, like the Open Doors Scholarship program will continue to be available. “We hope that this program will bring people in our community together in the spirit of helping each other through difficult times,” Perez said. She explained that the board hopes the program can nourish the mind, body and spirit of those who have recently lost their jobs, and help the Y build new relationships with those who many not have experienced what it has to offer.
