EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Skillin’s Jewelers:
• The longtime Norwich jewelry store/apartment building on Broad Street has received a power wash, custom windows, special showcase window trim and a fresh coat of paint in the 19th Century style.
• Owner Hal Skillin said green awnings on all front windows and over the main entrance will finish off the project.
• A portion of the work was afforded via state funding of $30,000 through the Norwich Business Improvement District. Construction estimates were solicited in the fall, work began in May and the project should be completed by new week.
• Skillin purchased the 1889 building in 1976.
• The curved glass replacement windows on the top floors were manufactured by Norwich Glass. Caputo Brothers Painting and Wallpapering painted, with color selections made by designer/decorator Mike McCollough of Norwich.
• “I would never have tackled this without grant money from BID. They have been a real shot in the arm for downtown,” said the jeweler.
West Lake Village:
• Construction has resumed at the West Lake Village complex in the Village of Sherburne. The maintenance-free development for maturing adults is located on Rt. 80 just west of the village.
Developer Donny Westcott of Westcott Three, LLC said the fourth condominium of five planned is under construction currently, with interior walls being erected. Windows and doors will go in next. The roof is on and the framing up for the unit’s garages and porches.
• All of the walls were constructed with environmentally-friendly, energy efficient and insulated concrete forms, he said.
• The foundation was poured in the fall. The privately funded project is expected to be complete by next spring.
