Greene PD gets new “green” vehicle
GREENE – A recent donation has added a new, energy efficient vehicle to the Village of Greene Police Department’s motor pool.
Thanks to the generosity of the Oregon-based company My GoPet and their Regional Sales Representative Mike Lummis, the department is now the proud owner of a GoPet, a 3-wheeled electric-powered personal transportation device customized for use by law enforcement.
The Greene department was chosen to receive the donation, Lummis explained, “because of their strong community involvement.”
Billed by the company’s website as “a personal transporter that’s economical, efficient and easy to use,” the GoPet has a maximum speed of 16 miles per hour and a range of roughly 24 miles per charge. Charging the vehicle’s battery, Lummis said, will cost under 3 cents at the village’s current electric rates.
According to Lummis, the public safety model gifted to the Greene Police Department with its lights, sirens and lettering is valued at $1,700. Models designed for material handling or recreational use start around $1,100, he said.
Chief Steve Dutcher said he intends to use the electric vehicle to patrol community events such as Labor Day and Apple Fest, which take place in the village. His current plan, he said, is to debut the Go-Pet at the Greene Arts and Craft Fair on July 25, but said it may make an appearance at the Greene Cruise-In prior to that date.
Dutcher said the department is also exploring other uses for the vehicle. For example, because the Go-Pet is ultra-quiet, it may also be used in place of some bike patrols.
