July 25 Golf Tournament to benefit Lobdell children
OXFORD – The bonds of friendship remain strong even after death. Just ask Nathaniel Emerson, Tim O’Brien and Matt Mayhew. The three Oxford graduates are proving the strength of their commitment to their former classmate and longtime friend John Lobdell by helping to safeguard the future of those who were most important to him.
Lobdell passed away on September 17, 2008 at the age of 35 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. He left behind a loving wife, Emma, and two young sons, Brody and Mason.
“John was always adamant that his boys would never have to worry about their education,” Emerson said.
While the couple had established both retirement accounts for themselves and college funds for the boys, now 8 and 5, they were forced to drain those accounts to pay for costly treatments after Lobdell’s diagnosis in 2007, he explained.
Knowing how important it was to their friend to see his children go to college, the three men have organized a benefit golf tournament on Saturday, July 25 at the Canasawacta Country Club to raise money for The Brody/Mason Fund.
“This fundraiser is specifically designed to revive the boys’ college funds, Emerson said. “All proceeds will go directly into the boys’ account.”
He and the event’s other organizers have secured several sponsorships already. Zillacom, a telecommunications company owned in part by another former classmate, has signed on as the tournament’s marquee sponsor. Other local businesses including Roma’s Pizzeria, The Stadium, Gallery 3-2-1 and AIM Fitness have also stepped forward to sponsor holes or donate items for the raffle which will be held during the event.
Additional sponsorships are still available, according to Emerson.
Lobdell was well known and loved by many, and the three are expecting plenty of old classmates to golf in the event, as well as other friends and family members. “It will be like a reunion,” predicted O’Brien.
Teams are still being accepted for the tournament, which will be a captain and crew format. Check in will begin at noon on the day of the event, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost to participate is $100 per golfer, which includes greens fees and cart rental, as well as a dinner in the Pavilion following the event. On-course beverages will be provided to participants free of charge, courtesy of Ridge Trucking and Logistics.
Non-golfers can attend the dinner at a cost of $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12.
According to Emerson, team registrations will be accepted through Monday, July 20. Advanced registration is required to secure a slot, as space is limited to 30 teams.
