Parks project gets environmental clearance

NORWICH – Thanks to a resolution adopted by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors Monday, future musicians performing in the parks won’t have to worry about a thing but entertaining.
Members of the Norwich band Dub State, which opened Saturday’s night’s show during Gus Macker, helped volunteers not only tear down but move the stage when rain forced the show inside the Norwich Fire Department.
“It would be great to be able to just play a gig in Norwich and not have to deal with the stage afterwards,” said drummer Nick Andrews.
The board formalized an important step in the downtown Norwich parks improvement project Monday by determining that the project would not have a significant adverse impact on the environment. The resolution makes way for a new stage and other improvements.
Fundraising is in full swing. A group called Friends of the Parks hopes to raise approximately $400,000 to make East and West Park safer and more viable venues for the county’s outdoor tourism events. Plans include a turn-of-the-century style performance stage, upgrading the electrical systems, providing water access, building new sidewalks, replacing overgrown shrubs, providing new benches and replacing two Civil War cannons.
The parks project is backed several businesses and the Norwich Business Improvement District.
