Couple still in critical condition after Sunday accident

NORWICH – A Norwich couple involved in a two-car accident that landed six in the hospital remain in critical condition, surrounded by dozens of family and friends.
Brian, 41, and Teresa Conant, 49, remain in the intensive care unit at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City after under going surgery, reported the family.
Brian’s brother, Mark Conant, speaking on behalf of the family, said his younger brother’s condition remains critical after Sunday’s Rt. 12 accident.
“In the last few days we’ve had some very serious conversations and we were told at the beginning that the outlook was not good,” he said.
Mark said his brother was a regular runner and an athlete.
“They said because he was so active and athletic that his body processed oxygen more efficiently, helping him beat the odds a little,” he said.
Mark said doctors informed the family that there was a high chance his brother would succumb to his wounds within 48 hours after he arrived at the center Sunday. He explained that his brother successfully underwent, a risky but necessary surgery Wednesday morning.
Mark also confirmed that Teresa Conant remains in critical condition in the center’s ICU.
Sunday afternoon, the couple along with three other adults and a seven year old child, were injured in a two-car collision on State Rt. 12 in the Town of Norwich.
New York State Police investigators at the scene said their initial findings indicated that a Blue 2009 Toyota Camry was traveling north along Rt. 12 at around 3:15 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, it veered to the right, drifting across the shoulder and striking the side of a stopped black Buick LeSabre as it prepared to exit the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Kingdom Hall parking lot.
Brian was the driver of the Buick LeSabre and the oncoming car struck his driver’s side door. His wife, Teresa, was in the passenger seat. Also in the back seat of the car was Brian’s mother-in-law, 67-year old Iris Delgado.
Although Iris and Teresa were rushed to Wilson via ambulance, crews called in Guthrie Air helicopter to fly Brian to the hospital.
The New York State Police reported Tuesday that Delgado was in serious condition; however Mark said her condition had improved to stable by Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of the Camry, who was identified as Clifford G. Williams, 73, of Ilion, was transported by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital for treatment and observation along with 36-year old Jason E. Williams, a passenger in the vehicle, police said. The Camry’s third passenger, 7-year old Zachary Williams, was also transported to CMH before being transferred to Upstate Medical’s pediatric unit for observation. Police said all three are in stable condition.
The accident remains under investigation and no tickets have been issued and no explanation for the cause of the accident has been released as of Thursday morning.
