New Berlin holds annual quilt show
NEW BERLIN – This weekend the Village of New Berlin will be filled with the bright colors of hand-stitched quilts and the excitement of youth as a number of community groups come together at the 2009 Quilting in New Berlin Show.
The Saturday event features a number of activities centered around Hyde Park, including St. Theresa’s Church Indoor Quilt Show, the village’s Outdoor Quilt Show and Community Yard Sale, Unadilla Valley Quilter’s Club Quilt Raffle and Bake Sale, New Berlin Police Department Bike Saftey Program, Little Foote’s Preschool’s craft tent, the New Berlin Fire Department will have a fire truck on display for the children and their EMS personnel will present a demonstration of basic first aid.
All the events are all scheduled between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday at, or very near, Hyde Park in the Village of New Berlin.
“There are a lot of different youth-oriented activities going on, sponsored by a number of local community groups. It’s a great time. My family and I attended last year’s and it was great and we’re looking forward to this year’s,” said New Berlin Village Mayor Wade Schrag.
Schrag said that for the first time this year, the event will feature a parade beginning at Milford Academy and winding its way to Hyde Park, less than quarter of a mile away.
“All children are invited to ride their bike or walk in this parade,” said event organizers Linda Foote.
The parade will feature the Village of New Berlin Fire Department, Little Foote’s Preschool, the Unadilla Valley Elementary School Band, the Unadilla Valley Quilting Bugs, the Unadilla Valley Girl Scouts and more.
The parade is set to begin behind Milford Academy, locate along South Main Street at 9:45 a.m.
A number of downtown New Berlin businesses will also have vendors at the park or will be having sidewalk sales and other offers during Saturday’s festivities.
The New Berlin Police Department will again be holding its bike program, sponsored by the Town of New Berlin from 11 to noon. The event will feature two free bike and helmet giveaways. Children wanting to participate in the event can bring their bikes to the tennis court at Hyde Park.
“Please don’t worry about whether your bike is new or old,” said Foote.
“Everyone should come down and just have a good time with the kids,” said Schrag.
