Accident victim dies from injuries
NORWICH – One of the six victims injured in a two-car collision last week died of his injuries Friday, surrounded by family and friends in the intensive care unit at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
A day after his wife, Teresa Conant, was upgraded from critical to stable condition, 41-year-old Brian Conant of Norwich passed away.
Brian was in the driver’s seat at the time of the July 12 crash with his wife sitting along side him in the passenger seat. Her mother, 67-year old Iris Delgado of Norwich, was sitting in the back of the vehicle. Her condition has been stable since early last week.
The three were leaving the parking lot of their church, Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall, when another vehicle heading north on Rt. 12 veered off the right side of the roadway and struck Conant’s driver side door, head on, while the Black Buick LeSabre he was driving sat idle.
Mark Conant said his brother passed away in the presence of his mother, siblings and wife, who is still recovering from the incident, along with several other family members.
“It’s horrible, obviously. One of the worst days of my life and we’re all so burned out emotionally there isn’t much to say,” Mark said Monday morning.
A memorial service open to the public will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in the Town of Norwich.
Mark said his brother was an outstanding athlete who was actively involved with the church and the community. Mark said his brother was a marathon runner who won the first Art Council Allegro Run in 2002.
“Our father became seriously ill with lung cancer, so Brian decided he was going to run the marathon for our father. He won it for him, taking first place in the inaugural run. He was an incredible person and my father couldn’t have been happier at the time,” said Mark.
Brian’s father, Rex Conant, later passed away from his illness July 12, 2002, exactly seven years to the day of Brian’s accident.
“July 12 is a ridiculously terrible day for our family,” noted Mark.
The driver of the other car in the accident, Clifford G. Williams, 73, of Ilion, was transported by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital, along with 36-year old Jason E. Williams, a passenger in the vehicle. A third passenger, 7-year old Zachary Williams, was also transported to CMH before being transferred to Upstate Medical’s pediatric unit for observation. Police said all three are in stable condition.
Delgado and Teresa Conant were rushed to Wilson via ambulance; crews called in Guthrie Air helicopter to fly Brian Conant to the hospital.
The accident remains under investigation by the New York State Police. No tickets have been issued as of Friday. Police did say Friday however that the cause of the accident did not seem to be related to any medical ailments.
