New technology improves mapping system
NORWICH – Just four years ago, the Chenango County Planning and Development Department used colored pens and pencils to customize a variety of geological maps for inter-departmental reference and customers’ requests.
The technology has advanced exponentially since then with Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, technology. At least a dozen maps are produced monthly – many for natural gas exploration purposes – and the department has already taken in more revenue than budgeted for 2009.
Because of its value, planners are questioning why Chenango is the only county in New York not listed as a member of a GIS clearinghouse.
Department of Planning Director Donna Jones brought the discrepancy before members of a county committee last week and requested permission to join the New York State Office of Cyber Security & Critical Infrastructure Coordination program.
“It is supposed to protect the effective use and public sharing of geographic information,” she said.
A recent map of the Finger Lakes Trail completed for a customer took county planners “hours and hours” of work; a membership to the NYS GIS Coordinating Body would have providing the same information in less than 10 minutes, Jones said.
Planning & Economic Development Committee Chairperson Linda E. Natoli asked Jones to contact the county’s Information Technology Department to gauge their interest in joining.
Led by a motion from Town of New Berlin Supervisor Ross Iannello, the committee agreed unanimously to become a member.
“We’re asked to create maps for natural gas purposes more and more. There are 1,800 properties related to gas exploration. We are all in the information business. We need to belong to this,” said Jones.
