Aim Fitness holds first Family Fitness Day for charity

NORWICH – Since Aim Fitness opened in December of 2007, owner Eric Montalvo said the community has been extremely supportive, and on Sunday, the business wants to do something as a way of giving back some of that support.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 26, Aim Fitness will hold the first Family Fitness Day for charity. Throughout the day, the gym will host activities including: a 22.4 mile bike tour, a five K run / walk and a Body Combat launch class at Weiler Park. “We wanted to think of something we could do to give back to the community that has welcomed us with open arms,” Montalvo said. The bike tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 9:45, the five K run / walk will begin. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female participants, and the first place winners will receive a new pair of sneakers, courtesy of McLauglin’s and New Balance. At 10:45, the Body Combat launch class will begin in Weiler Park.
All proceeds from the event will be split evenly between Catholic Charities’ Roots and Wings program and the Chenango County SPCA.
In addition to the three main events taking place during the day, Aim will also be hosting a tug of war competition. Individuals or teams of 15 people can sign up for the contest, at a cost of $5 each.
A chicken barbecue will be held at 12:30. Meal tickets can be purchased in advance until July 17 for $8. In addition, a DJ will be on hand to provide entertainment throughout the day.
Montalvo explained that the event will be for children and adults alike. Activities for kids will include a bounce house, kickball games, an obstacle course, face painting, bubble blowing, a hula hoop competition, Simon says and a kids’ K run. Children who participate in the kids’ K run will run around the track at Weiler Park. Medals will be provided to the participants. “We get a lot of whole families here,” Montalvo said, explaining that many parents utilize the on site child care facility. “Hopefully this gets kids interested in being fit.” The supervised children’s’ activities will begin at 8 a.m. in Weiler Park.
All children’s events are being offered free of charge with the price of an adult event registration or meal ticket purchase. Adults can register for any of the three activities at a cost of $18 each, $32 for two or $45 for all three. Participants may also register the day of the event for an additional $3. T-shirts will be available to those registrants on a first come, first serve basis.
In addition to the other events, a Chinese auction will be held throughout the day. Local companies have donated goods that will be available at the auction, including a large basket full of Pampered Chef products, an adult evening out package, which includes dinner, wine and an overnight stay at a local hotel. Aim will donate memberships and other local businesses are still in the process of providing other products for the auction.
Montalvo explained that he hopes the Family Fitness Day will become an annual tradition. “This is the first one, and we want it to be a success,” he said. Currently, he said, he has no way of knowing what to expect in terms of the number of registrants or the amount of money that could be raised. Montalvo encouraged community members, even those who are not participating in the events, to come out and enjoy the Chinese auction, the music and the other events taking place.
