The annointed elite

There is good reason why soooo many attack Sarah Palin. And good reason why the attackers would not seize on, say, Mike Huckabee. Or another politician who walked away from a governorship or other office.
They fear her. They fear that little woman who has little money and big hair. Politicians, George Soros, columnists galore, the Katie Courics and Maureen Dowds, many Republicans and more Democrats truly fear her.
Here is why:  The electorate of course stretches from left to right. On the far left and far right are the true believers. My guess is that 35 percent on the left and  the right always vote for whoever their party nominates. Even if they hold their noses some elections.
This leaves the middle. In presidential elections candidates work on the 35 percent to get the nomination. After they wrap that up they go to work on the middle. Where the swing votes lie. The middle has millions who actually evaluate candidates. Many are truly not sure how they will vote until the last week or two.
The middle includes lots of blue collar, regular folks. These are people who eat at diners, bowl, take in ball games, labor in factories, fight fires, work in the trades - like plumbing.
Does this ring any bells. This is why Joe the Plumber was prized by McCain’s campaign. And why he was attacked so viciously by Obama henchmen. This is why Joe Biden bragged about the folks he knew at a diner. (The diner went out of business years ago, unbeknown to “Diner Joe”.)  This is why we saw candidate Obama bowling. It is why candidates toss out first pitches. It is why the President showed up at a fast food restaurant. And why Hillary quaffed brews and bragged about supporting certain baseball teams.
These big-time candidates try to show us they are at one with the regular guys. Because that is where so many swing votes are - amongst the regular folks.
This is hard work for most of them. Because they ain’t regular folks. Most of them are millionaires. Most send their kids to private schools.   Many come from families that have been in politics for years. They feel entitled to rule us. Many went to exclusive schools. Many have never held any job other than political or quasi-political positions.
Few have ever run a business, made a payroll. Many have never stepped foot in a diner or supermarket. Many have not driven a car for decades. Many do not touch money. They have no need to, since they never shop or pick up a tab. Most do not do their own taxes or pay their own bills.
In other words, we are ruled by an elite. Economist/writer Thomas Sowell calls them “The Annointed.”  They do not live like the folks in the fabled middle. Not in the least. And so they pretend they do. To win votes. They bowl and snort beer and shoot hoops and shoot a lot of bull.
Meanwhile, the opponent they fear is the candidate who actually comes from the middle.
Sarah Palin does not do photo ops in diners. That is where she and her family eat. She does not stage fishing trips and snowmobile rides for camera crews to capture for the evening news. These are normal activities for her and her family. She does not have to fake them.
She does not need an aide to buy old-looking work clothes so she can look the part going to work on hubby’s fishing boat. Hers are hanging on a hook in the back room. She does not have to say she feels your pain. With a mob of kids, one with Down Syndrome, and no wealth to speak of, you KNOW she does.
She is from the middle. Folks in the middle know it, feel it. She is a politician who has the potential to draw the most votes from the middle. She can add those “middle” votes to the 35 percent base of a party and win.
She is not running for any office. Yet political and media elites are on the attack. They are smearing and belittling her every which way from Sunday. Being political animals, they know the scent of the enemy.
