Otsego County Fair opens in Morris Tuesday

MORRIS – The Otsego County Fair continues boasting theme of the “six best days of summer” providing live entertainment, carnival rides, demolition derbies and countless other events from Aug. 4-9 in Morris.
Fair Manager Judy Harris said that by the end of last year’s event, more than 37,000 patrons had visited the Morris fairgrounds, averaging about 7,400 daily.
“Last year we had a good number of people show and we’re hoping that it’ll continue this year despite the economic down turn. If we hold steady from last year, we’ll be pleased,” she said.
The Red Cross will have food collection bins at the fair’s front gate this year, and Harris said organizers are dealing with an increasing demand for the charity.
Before the fair kicks off, the traditional evening before will feature area soloists, instrumentalists and church choirs for a free, old-fashioned hymn held at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 3, inside the Grange Hall.
The gates open Tuesday at 8 a.m. with free admission on opening day, courtesy of Wilber National Bank. There will be activities in the Grange Hall. Agricultural activities include 4-H shows, the Blue Ribbon Cloggers and at noon in the grandstand there will be a New York State Sire Stakes Harness Race. Harris said prices for grandstand shows are not included in the general fair admission; however free grand stand admission would be granted for the Firemen’s Parade and fireworks show.
The Fire Service and School Band Parade, sponsored by New York Central Mutual Fire Insurance Co., will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The procession will lead around the track with a fireworks display following the march.
Returning from last year will be the petting zoo and equine demonstrations.
A variety of tractor pulls will take place Wednesday as well as the Otsego County Fair Pageant, beginning with registration for babies at noon. The teen pageant will begin later at 1 p.m.
The Gillette Shows carnival and midway open every day at noon, explained Harris.
Gail and Monty Smith, Southern Gospel and Country Music artists will perform at 1 p.m. Thursday and the “Total Destruction Demolition Derby” will be at 7:30 p.m.
The derby will then return again at 1 and 6 p.m. on Sunday as one of the final events to take place at this year’s fair.
Saturday’s events will host two new events – a BMX bicycle jump and trick show at 7 p.m. followed by a special team demo derby.
Admission Wednesday to Sunday is $5 for adults (16 and over), $2.50 for youths (8-15) and free for children under age 8. Parking is $2. Season passes are $15 for adults and $8 for children over age eight.
