Chenango Lake residents victims in rash of thefts

NEW BERLIN – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of New Berlin Police Department have been investigating a rash of thefts centered around the Chenango Lake community in the Town of New Berlin.
The crime spree began July 4 with several stolen cars, then a home burglary two weeks later followed by a rash of car break-ins a few days after that.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Detective Richard Cobb reported Monday that investigators had not ruled out that the incidents may be connected.
“It’s hard to say at this point, but we certainly haven’t ruled it out. Given the close proximity the crimes have to each other and the time frame in which they were committed, it’s something we can’t ignore,” he said.
He explained that the Sheriff’s Office was handling the stolen car and theft complaints while the New Berlin Police Department is investigating the home burglary.
“Technically that’s their case and we have the others, but obviously we are all working closely together,” said the detective.
On July 4, police said four cars were stolen from the area around the lake.
Two were taken in Town of Norwich and later found along State Route 23; the other two cars were also recovered at undisclosed locations.
“All four cars were taken July 4th and later found in the early morning hours of 3 and 4 a.m., basically that same day. They were all recovered within a couple hours,” said Cobb.
Police said they believed the vehicles were the targets of joy-riders because several showed the signs of reckless driving and two were completely totaled. One of the stolen cars was fished out of a nearby pond and the other, a destroyed truck, was an older model that suffered damage to its engine and body too costly to repair.
Cobb said the other two vehicles suffered damage similar to a minor motor vehicle accident as well.
That same day, a four-wheeler was also taken from Bryant Road in the Town of New Berlin and has not been recovered. Police said there was evidence linking the thefts.
Roughly two weeks later, the New Berlin Police began investigating a burglary that took place on July 15 on County Rt. 31 in the Town of New Berlin.
Cobb said evidence technicians aided in processing the scene, but he did not wish to comment any further on a matter being handled by another agency.
The New Berlin Police could not be reached for comment.
Two days after the break-in, sheriff’s deputies were again called to the Chenango Lake area to investigate a rash of vehicle thefts on July 17 along Lower Lake Road.
Cobb said the vehicles were all unlocked and parked at several different locations. He said property was removed from some of vehicles in the early morning or late night hours.
Police have made not arrests in connection to the thefts and are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 337-1924. All calls will be kept confidential.
