NORWICH – The Artists’ Palette opened its doors at 10 a.m. Monday at 18 Hubbard Ave. in Norwich. Owner Jill Kraft said, “The quaint shop is sure to meet the needs of both the experienced and the budding artist.” The motivation for the Artists’ Palette is simple. Kraft, a Chenango County native and accomplished painter, understands the diverse needs of a cultural community.
“I always thought it was interesting that Chenango County is a melting pot of artisans, yet there was no art supply store,” Kraft said. “As an artist I find it hard to complete a piece of work when I have to stop and drive an hour to retrieve the supplies I need.”
Kraft said her goal is to provide a resource for the local artist community. The Artists’ Palette will be a showcase where local artists can consign their work, as well as a place where the youngest artists, children, can begin to cultivate a love of the craft.
Initially, the shop will offer various lines of painting mediums, artists’ brushes, canvas, and a wide selection of drawing materials. The Artists’ Palette also offers numerous accessories to meet the needs of local artists. Specialty items include glass mosaic and custom made easels. The Artists’ Palette is currently displaying consignment pieces such as beaded jewelry and locally made soaps.
“In time, I hope to bring in an educational component that will allow artists of all mediums to teach their craft. I would like to create a community gallery where local artists can show their work in a professional setting. I ultimately want this shop to be more than a retail store. I want it to evolve into a place where art is created and celebrated,” said Kraft. “There are hundreds of artists here, and now they have somewhere to go.”
The Artists’ Palette is open Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m., to noon and Kraft can be reached at 244-1445.
