New Berlin to host this year's Firemen's Convention
NEW BERLIN – Later this month, firefighters from all across Chenango County will come together in the Village of New Berlin for their 87th annual convention.
The 2009 Chenango County Firemen’s Convention will be held on two separate weekends beginning Friday, Aug. 21 with a memorial service St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin followed by a dinner banquet at the New Berlin Fire Department – this year’s host for the event.
Firefighters at the banquet will hear guest speaker, Fort Drum Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Jellie, as he makes a presentation to the members.
The 2009 recipient of the Chenango County Fireman of the Year will also be unveiled.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, members will convene at the Unadilla Valley Central School for an educational seminar called “The Point of No Return – Rule of Air Management” put on by the City of Seattle’s Fire Battalion Chief Phillip A. Jose. Jose and his crew have spoken at the international Firehouse World and Firehouse Expo and the training they offer is considered to be life saving, explained one of the event’s organizers, New Berlin firefighter George Hanslmaier.
“The convention is basically to honor the volunteers and Chenango county service members, establish a memorial to those who have served and offer us a forum to present the county’s service awards,” said Hanslmaier.
The next weekend, the 21 Chenango County Fire Departments will return to New Berlin to hold a second round of convention activities in conjunctions with the 48th annual Youth Days celebration.
The festivities take place all through the weekend on the grounds of Milford Academy in downtown New Berlin along South Main Street and feature carnival rides and entertainment.
The firefighters will be in the Saturday night parade at 6 p.m., Aug. 29 followed the next day by a firematics competition and fire equipment expo behind Milford Academy at Fish Field.
Registration for the firematics will start at 9 a.m. Sunday. The firematics competitions include a number of skill challenges between the area departments in a fun atmosphere.
One competition, Midnight Alarm, pits crews against each other in timed races to suit up in full turn-out gear. Other competitions feature the hose battle where teams carefully aim powerful hoses at a large ball placed between them; the first team to push it over to the other scores a point. The matches will be between service crews, with a separate category for the department’s respective high school explorer groups.
While these activities are going on there will be a fire equipment expo featuring several vendors, with displays on site.
“By spreading the convention over several days and having different types of events, we are encouraging everybody to attend as much as possible and enjoy a time of brotherhood with your fellow firefighter and community,” said the New Berlin Fire Department in a release to participants.
