Holy Family playground project makes progress

NORWICH – Holy Family is pleased to introduce a new Early Childhood program beginning this September. Suzanne Scafidi, who recently received her Literacy MSED from SUNY Potsdam (with distinction) has accepted the position of Early Childhood teacher. Scafidi is a graduate of Holy Family and Norwich City Schools.
Designing the Early Childhood program prompted a review of Holy Family’s facilities, and one of the areas that needed improvement was the playground. A committee including Gene Chilion, principal, Nancy Ritzel, Pre-K teacher and several parents of young children met last spring to discuss an age-appropriate play area, and the committee proposed adding a separate play area that would specifically serve the needs of children ages 3 through approximately 6 years.
The playground equipment arrived at school before the end of June, and the site is now being properly prepared complete with a safety fence enclosing the area on the north side of the school. This project is set to be completed well in advance of the first day of school, Sept. 9. The Robert Smith Foundation provided the funds to build this beautiful playground for the youngest Holy Family students, as well as donations to Holy Family’s Annual Fund by families and friends of HFS.
There are still some openings available for Holy Family’s 3-year old class. The Pre-K program is accepting children on a wait-list basis at this time. Any interested parents can contact Gene Chilion at 337-2207 for information about our Early Childhood Program.
