Senator Libous ready to beat prostate cancer

BINGHAMTON – Senator Tom Libous (R-C-I Binghamton) last week was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“I feel great,” said Libous. “I’ve got more energy than ever and I’m going to keep fighting for the hardworking people of the Southern Tier.”
Libous, 56, said a routine PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test administered as part of his annual physical exam showed elevated levels of the antigen that is used in detecting prostate cancer. His physician recommended follow up tests and procedures to confirm the diagnosis.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men behind skin cancer. About one in every six men will experience a prostate cancer diagnosis at some point in his life. Approximately 192,280 new prostate cancer diagnoses will be made in 2009.
“I have every confidence in my doctors and I’m very, very fortunate to have a strong, supportive family to help me keep on fighting…and winning.”
Libous and Dr. John Miller of Lourdes will determine his treatment plan in the upcoming weeks.
“When you feel great, you don’t expect to hear your doctor tell you that you have prostate cancer,” said Libous. “So it just goes to show that annual exams are definitely worth the hassle and discomfort. This is exactly why they’re needed. They can save your life.”
