Greene starts the year with a new superintendent

GREENE – With less than a week before the official start of the 2009-10 academic year, Greene’s new superintendent has his work cut out for him as he settles into a new job, a new district and a new home.
On Tuesday, Jonathan Retz started his new job as superintendent of the Greene Central School District.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be here,” said Retz, who was appointed in June to replace retiring administrator Gary Smith.
The new administrator’s first three days have been filled with meetings, as he familiarizes himself with the district’s administrative structure, faculty and staff, board and building project.
The more he learns about Greene, he said, the more excited he becomes.
“There are a lot of great things going on here,” Retz explained, citing the district’s academic success, strong community support, forward-looking building project and stable finances. “I want to continue that.”
Prior to accepting the position at Greene, Retz spent seven years as middle school principal at the Letchworth Central School District in Wyoming County. He described the small rural district, located roughly an hour from both Rochester and Buffalo, as very similar to Greene in size and community make up.
Getting acclimated will be a learning process, he said, but he hopes to be able to tap into the knowledge and expertise of the district’s staff.
“We’ve got amazing people here,” said Retz, who stated his intention of working as a team with existing administrators.
“There is still a lot of faculty and staff I haven’t met,” he said, explaining that this is something he hopes to rectify on Tuesday, when teachers and staff return.
Part of his “entry plan,” is to be visible throughout the district. To that end, he plans to attend as many athletic and district-wide events as he can, as well as spend time in each of the school buildings introducing himself to students and staff.
Retz said he also plans to become actively involved in the local community, particularly with organizations like the Chenango River Theatre. He and his family have already begun exploring Greene and are eager to learn more about what the surrounding area has to offer as well.
On Monday, he and his wife Sally moved into their new home on the outskirts of the Village of Greene. It was the first property they looked at with their local realtor, and they “absolutely loved it,” Retz said.
Two of the couple’s three daughters, who range in age from 4 to 9, will be starting school in the district next week.
“They are excited, too,” he reported.
