Greene offense in midseason form in shutout of Oxford

Greene 35, Oxford 0
OXFORD – From afar, it may have looked like someone greased up the football when Oxford had the ball on offense.
The Blackhawks had 11 fumbles over the course of four quarters, while the Greene offense was in midseason form in the Trojans’ shutout victory Friday night.
It was Greene’s second straight shutout over Oxford in as many seasons, and third straight victory in this long-standing rivalry.
“We could not get a good snap to save our lives,” lamented Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “It could have been opening-game jitters, and it’s something we need to fix by next week.”
While Oxford’s offense was its own worst enemy, the Trojans’ offense was the Oxford defense’s worst enemy.
Scott Gorton threw TD passes of 60, 20, and 12 yards to Brendan Kinne, and Tyler Beckwith added a one-yard TD run as the Trojans rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead. “We just did not have an answer for Kinne on the outside,” Chrystie said. “Other than a couple of runs, we did okay against their rushing attack. Their passing spread us out more than we expected, and they executed extremely well.”
Gorton finished 8-for-16 with one interception for 203 yards, Kinne caught five balls for 148 yards, while Beckwith rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries. Nick Wilcox added a 38-yard TD scamper in the second half to cap the game’s scoring.
“We were able to move the ball, we just shot ourselves in the foot,” Chrystie said. “I told the guys after the game that we just played a very good team that is competing for a Class C title. This game has no bearing on what we do the rest of the season. It won’t prevent us from making the playoffs, it was just an opportunity.”
Oxford amassed 235 total yards in the contest. John Wonka threw for 135 yards, 78 of those going to senior receiver Jeremy Nelson. Booker Davis added 37 yards rushing and 48 yards receiving.

Sidney 20, B-G 14
SIDNEY – Sidney’s offense caught B-G on its heels in the opening quarter. The Warriors led by a touchdown after one quarter, and made that lead stand up in Friday’s season-opener.
Aaron Wood had two TD runs for the Warriors finishing with 126 yards on 20 carries. Wood had short scoring runs of nine and six yards in the opening quarter putting his club on top. “Wood is a heck of a back, we knew that coming in,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “They are big up front, well disciplined, and they were able to get chunks of yards. There were times we were able to penetrate and stuff them, and it was kind of a bend-but-not-break defense.”
Although Sidney had its way offensively in the first quarter, B-G’s special teams provide a momentary spark. Sophomore Billy Holden returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown after Wood’s opening touchdown tying the game at six.
Sidney expanded its lead to two touchdowns in the third quarter when Anthony Masi scored on a 15-yard jaunt. A pair of Dylan Umbra extra-points on three attempts made it a 20-6 game.
B-G closed the gap in the fourth quarter after a 13-yard Dakota Vandermark scoring run. “Going against a quality opponent, I think our younger kids didn’t know what hit them early on,” Mattingly said. “Once they acclimated themselves to the quickness and physicality of the game, they were able to step up a bit. We gave them a pretty tough game, the kids kept their heads up, and played hard.”
Vandermark finished with 82 yards rushing to lead the B-G offensive attack.

Newfield 20, UV-Edmeston 0
NEW BERLIN – UV-Edmeston failed to cash in on a golden opportunity late in the first half, and went on to a shutout loss Friday night against Newfield.
The Storm, trailing 8-0, drove to the Trojans’ one-yard line with a first-and-goal. A penalty coupled with stout Newfield defense ended the host club’s best scoring threat of the game. “We consistently drove the ball throughout the game, but we’d have a penalty or a fumble to stall the drive,” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler.  “Give Newfield credit, they made some great defensive adjustments in the second half to take away our inside running game.”
Darin Mascaretti, quarterback for the Trojans, connected on a long pass to Tyler Edwards to set up Edwards’ score in the second period. Mascaretti added a TD run in the second half and finished with a team-high 117 yards on the ground
Ian Davis topped the UV-E rushing charts with 138 yards on 16 carries. The lost was the 11th straight for the Storm going back to the final game of the 2007 season.
UV-E plays Greene Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Norwich High School.
