You have no doubt read the President’s poll numbers have plunged. 
There is little mystery why this is. The plunge has nothing to do with race. It has nothing to do with organized protests. Nothing to do with his wife’s fashion sense. Nothing to do with the President being over-exposed on television.
The numbers are going down because the President and Congress keep proposing things that most Americans do not like. No sooner does the furor simmer down from one issue then these guys propose something else that most folks do not want.

Closing the Gitmo prisons is something they have polled. The President says he will do it. Yet about 55 percent of Americans oppose it. A majority of voters disagree with his decision.
Well, Tom, sometimes a president has to make an unpopular decision or two. The number has grown well beyond two.
The ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program should have been really popular. It was like a welfare giveaway. It would help beleaguered car dealers. Yet only one American in three felt the program helped the economy.
Only one American in three favors the big stimulus package. And this is a gain from an earlier poll. That is an anemic level of support for such a humongous spending bill. The President insisted this spending package was absolutely essential for our survival. Only a third of voters agreed.
Government has been working overtime to fix the economy. Government publicity machines pour out praise for what Washington has done. But about 54 percent of us fear government will do too much to fix the economy.
You already know the President and Congress’s healthcare reform proposals are not popular. Only one voter in four believes the Democrats should pass those proposals. That is a paltry number.
Here is a stunning figure. Only 22 percent of us believe Congress has a good or excellent understanding of the healthcare bills. Hello. Most voters figure they know more about the proposed bills than their own legislators. I have not seen any figure of how many think the President has a good understanding of the bills. I bet it is not high.
What do Americans tell pollsters the most important concern should be for Washington?  Their most important concern is what the President and Congress have totally ignored. In fact, they have trod on it. It is deficit reduction. Yes, most of us feel deficit reduction is the biggest issue. Meanwhile, Washington’s spending will sock us with $9 trillion in deficits over 10 years. The figure went up $2 trillion week before last.
Over 54 percent of us want to see tax cuts for the middle class. Yet the spending this administration has embraced must raise taxes everywhere. The government is becoming desperate for money.
Only one-third of us feel the country is headed in the right direction. Well over half of us oppose the health plan proposals. Nearly 60 percent oppose single-payer plans.
Meanwhile, more Americans favor town hall protestors than don’t. Only a third of us believe stimulus money will actually be used for roads and bridges.
Please note, I have tried to keep my own opinions out of this column. Instead, I have included opinions from across and around the country. Those opinions indicate the President keeps choosing to paddle against the flow. In issue after issue he wants the country to do things that large numbers of voters do not favor.
Last week his administration said it would go after CIA interrogators. These are the guys who extracted information from some of the nastiest America-haters on earth. That information prevented more attacks on Americans. I have a feeling this decision will turn out to be another one with which a majority of voters disagree. In other words, the list grows.
