Falcons soar in homecoming game

NEW BERLIN – Southern Tech never knew what hit them – except that it was someone in maroon and white.
Milford Academy, worked its attacking defensive scheme to perfection shutting out Tech, 40-0, Saturday at Fish Field on homecoming weekend.
“We gave up a lot of points the first week and the defense was kind of in disarray,” said Milford Academy coach Bill Chaplick. “They came around this week. We blitzed 78 out of 80 plays last week, and we blitzed every play this week. The style of defense we play, we recruit the best athletes up front, and cornerbacks that can lock down receivers. I don’t think (Southern Tech) has ever seen anything like that.”
Todd Thomas had two interceptions for the Falcons returning the second one 75 yards for a touchdown making it 17-0 in the second quarter. Milford Academy had four interceptions in the first half and six for the game.
Offensively, Nicholas Raven of Moscow, Pennsylvania came off the bench to throw a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter. Backup running back Aaron Marks rushed for a team-high 64 yards and a second-quarter touchdown that completed a 28-point stanza and a 31-0 lead
Linebacker John Dougherty had three sacks and knocked the Southern Tech starting quarterback out of the game on the first play from scrimmage. Dougherty added to a standout defensive performance with a safety in the second half.
“This was the best overall game we’ve played and we got to play everybody,” Chaplick said. “Southern Tech is a new program and we’re a program with great history and great players. We’ve paid our dues, and we were not going to let them walk into our house and have them expect that we would lay down.”
On special teams, Igor Garcia was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points, and he put the initial Milford Academy points on the board nailing a short-range field goal midway through the first quarter.
The Falcons play Wagner College’s junior varsity team, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Staten Island.
FALCONS NOTES: Milford alumni, Craig Cooper, had two touchdowns including a game-winning rushing touchdown in the Miami Hurricanes’ 38-34 win over Florida State Monday night....Antonio Dixon, a defensive tackle who played for Milford five years ago, was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles Monday afternoon. Dixon was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins.
