DOT shuts down lanes on Rt. 12 for three weeks worth of maintenance
NORWICH – Motorists traveling along State Highway 12 will encounter delays and single-lane traffic for about a quarter-mile stretch in and around the City of Norwich’s south end as the New York State Department of Transportation conducts repairs over the next three weeks.
DOT Traffic Operations Center Manager Bill Seaman reported that crews would begin work from Prentice Street in the city to the Burger King parking lot along the commercial area of the state highway in the Town of Norwich.
Seaman said crews had filed for authorizations allowing them to close one lane of traffic.
“They are milling and paving, alternating lane closures both south and north bound are expected,” said Seaman.
The DOT is also beginning work today at another location on Rt. 12 between the Broome County line and County Rt. 2 in the Town of Greene.
Work at both sites began at 6:30 this morning and is expected to be completed by Sept. 25, weather permitting.
Flagmen will be at both sites to guide traffic and the DOT is asking motorists to slow down and pay heed to posted signs in these areas, as conditions in traffic direction may change from day to day.
The projects are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed in 2009 as part of the federal government’s efforts to stimulate the receding economy.
The New York State Police and other law enforcement agencies will be near the areas of road work and want to remind drivers that fines in work zones are doubled.
In addition to the hefty fines, if a motorist has two current convictions of speeding in a work zone on their driver’s license, New York State law also allows for its immediate suspension.
