Police: Motorists need to be alert as school opens

NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department is urging motorists to use caution on the road as school opens and hundreds of children will soon be walking to school and boarding buses all over Norwich.

“Everyone who drives a vehicle in Norwich at the time prior to the school day beginning needs to be especially watchful for walking students and stopped school buses,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.

The chief said parents also need to remind their children of some common sense pedestrian rules: Look before crossing; cross streets only at intersections; watch for turning cars; and obey traffic signals and crossing guards.

Angelino added, “The time of day children walk to school is particularly dangerous because that is the same time of day many people are also driving to work. Once school begins, motorists need to take this into account and leave a few minutes earlier.”
