IT director to retire

NORWICH – The director of Chenango County’s information technology department has witnessed monumental changes since 1979 when he was appointed to oversee a single mainframe for the county and a spattering of terminals located in various offices.

Since then, Frank Tiffany has seen his responsibilities grow from managing a one person department to a staff of six employees, monitoring a nearly $300,000 budget, and maintaining several servers and 450 personal computers. Terminals cost about $3,000 each 30 years ago compared to today’s $700 to $800 price tag for a single PC, he said.

Tiffany will step down on Oct. 2. The county’s intent is to refill the position, said Chenango County Clerk of the Board RC Woodford.
