New Berlin marijuana crop cleared by police
NEW BERLIN – Tuesday, police officers in the Town of New Berlin raided the property of a 51-year-old man and seized 35 marijuana plants, estimated to have a street value of $25,000 to $35,000.
Michael F. Dibbell was charged with growing cannabis, a misdemeanor, by the Town of New Berlin Police Department after they, along with the New York State Police, searched the 70-acre property with a helicopter.
New Berlin’s acting officer in charge, Dominick Commessol said police had arrested Dibbell for “the exact same crime,” in the past, but he couldn’t recall the exact date of the incident.
“We did a couple of fly-overs in a state police helicopter, searching a total of seven targeted areas. On the fifth one we found these scattered all over the property in the ground and in pots,” he said.
Commessol said many of the maturing plants were around 6 to 7 feet tall and were hidden among thick foliage and thorn bushes about quarter of mile into a wooded area.
“They weren’t out in the open in any sense. He’s been caught before, so he went out of his way to try and hide them this time,” said the officer.
After locating the crop at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, police retrieved the plants using ATVs and four wheel drive pick-ups in an clearing operation that took about three and a half hours.
Dibbell was released and is scheduled to appear in Town of New Berlin Court on Sept. 16.
