Thrift store expands and uniform shop opens; Chinese take-out on the way
NORWICH – The Pink Door recently completed a summer-long expansion, store volunteers confirmed this week.
The thrift clothing store, located next to the back entrance of McLaughlin’s Department store off of American Avenue, now extends to South Broad Street. That space was previously occupied by McLaughlin’s shoe department.
Julie Clark, Volunteer Coordinator for Chenango Memorial Hospital, whose women’s auxiliary operates the store, said the expansion is in response to the closing of the Salvation Army.
“We definitely saw a need with the Salvation Army closing next door; we thought we could help meet that need,” said Clark. “As soon as we heard, we wanted to see what we could do to help the community.”
The Pink Door’s Broad Street entrance will become accessible to the public immediately following a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony Septe. 29, Clark said.

NORWICH – General Tso’s, anyone?
A new Chinese restaurant in downtown Norwich is opening soon, and it appears another could be on the way.
City Code Officer Jason Lawrence confirmed that all construction plans and permits for the Lucky Kitchen in the P&C plaza have been approved and that construction is “about eighty percent complete.” A renovator on-site said the restaurant would be ready in three weeks.
As for the second take-out, a sign inside the door reading: “Chinese Restaurant Coming So” (sic), is all that indicates what could be next in the vacant spot one door up from The Dollar Tree on South Broad Street.
“No plans have been submitted to me for that one,” said Lawrence. No contact information was immediately available.

NORWICH – Scrub Fusion is a product of the rising demand for health care professionals combined with Norwich’s location halfway between two large shopping centers, said owner Nasib “Nick” Mahmud.
The new retail shop, specializing in nursing uniforms and accessories, opened Wednesday. It’s located at 10 Mechanic St.
“We picked Norwich for its central location,” said Mahmud. “The prices people pay in Vestal and Utica are too much. We can offer the same products cheaper than the bigger stores because this our niche, we have the access to buy large quantities of just these products.”
Scrub Fusion carries Dickies and Cherokee scrub tops and pants, along with several other smaller brands.
“The smaller brands don’t advertise as much so the products cost less,” Mahmud said. “They’re the same quality and we can pass the savings on to the customer.”
The store also offers shoes, identification lanyards and other accessories.
Mahmud is originally from Los Angeles and says he has a background in family-run business. His fiancé has been a certified nursing assistant for three years.
Scrub Fusion is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday except Thursday, when it stays open until 8 p.m.
