Greene tops G-MU in shootout to win Oxford Tournament

OXFORD – Greene needed a penalty-kick shootout to unseat G-MU as Oxford Tournament champions.
After two overtimes and the first round of penalty kicks, the shootout went to sudden victory. Curtis Richards made back-to-back stops for the Trojans in goal setting up Nate Patrick’s winning kick.
“They played us tough and have some solid players,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “We controlled a lot of the first half, but they wouldn’t go away. They kept plugging and came on strong in the second half.”
Jake Shearer gave Greene a one-goal halftime lead scoring at 12:55 after an Alex Driscoll pass. G-MU’s Alex Schmidt was able to net the tying goal scoring with 7:22 left in regulation.
In Friday’s preliminary round, the Trojans routed Greene, 10-1, while G-MU defeated the host Blackhawks, 4-1.
In the consolation game, Kyle Ferrington had a hat trick for Oxford, who raced to a 4-1 halftime lead over the Spartans to earn the club’s second win this season.
Jake Carr added two goals and one assist for Oxford, and Cory Seiler along with Taylor Bates scored.

D.J. Worden, Brett Rasmussen, Dustin Davis, and Nate Stark all scored for OV. “We shot the ball better than expected,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We didn’t get a large number of shots, but we were able to convert on a number of them.”
Worden had the opening goal taking a through pass, then beating the defense unassisted.

HAMILTON – Sherburne-Earlville dropped a pair of one-goal shutout contests losing a non-division game to Herkimer, then following that up with a defeat in the consolation game of the Hamilton Optimist Tournament on Saturday.
Trevor Rorda scored from 20 yards out in the second half to give Herkimer the advantage. “This was a game we pretty much dominated,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “It’s a disappointing loss as we missed high or wide on a number of quality shots.”
Playing its third game in as many days, the Marauders had little left for the Rockets in dropping the tournament’s consolation game.
“After playing so well the night before, the guys were pretty much worn out,” Rodriguez said.
Alan Cizenski scored for DeRuyter in the second half. Both teams finished with 10 shots on goal.

NEW BERLIN – Charlotte Valley scored three straight goals after trailing to Unadilla Valley early in the game, and went on to win the New York Pizzeria Tournament title Saturday night.
Jackie Gilley scored the first of her two goals with one second left in the first half giving her club a 2-1 lead.
Gilley would score the initial goal of the second half three minutes into the action after a direct kick.
UV took the lead just over 15 minutes into the game when Amanda Tumilowicz assisted Jordan Anderson. Kate Fagan had UV’s second tally on a direct kick with 29:56 to play.
In the consolation game, G-MU picked up its first win of the season blanking winless Bainbridge-Guilford. Kirsten Gonzalez put the Raiders on the board at 19:33 of the first half, and Kali Murphy tacked on an insurance goal in the second half.
Friday, UV advanced to the finals scoring four times in the first half against B-G. Krystyn Gould scored twice, her first just four minutes into the game on a pass from Fagan. Carly Lorence padded edge just three minutes later. Adding tallies were Anderson and Kara Collins.
B-G’s goals all came in the second half as Randi Conway, Raileigh Hall, and Alyssa Falciana scored.
G-MU dropped a hard-fought battle to defending Section IV, Class D champion Charlotte Valley.
CV broke a 1-1 tied on Sarah Haight’s goal at 27:47. Gilley netted what proved the winning goal 15 minutes later.
Taylor Antczak tied the game for G-MU just five minutes into the second half off a Courtney Hillman pass. Gonzalez scored in the final 10 minutes drawing the Raiders to within one goal.

Liz Wentlent, named to the all-tournament team, had two goals for Greene, who led 2-0 at halftime.
Oxford battled back with tallies from Kalah Parks and Julie Heggie.
Watertown IHC won the tournament beating Oxford on Friday, 8-1, and defeating Norwich, 7-0, in the finals.

GREENE – Greene and Afton advanced to the finals of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament winning semifinals games on Saturday.
The Trojans upended Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, a defending Section III champion, 2-0 in the opening contest. Christine Conroe scored at 15:21 of the first half, and Andrea Day added an insurance goal with 10:28 expired in the second half.
The Trojans applied steady pressure in the V-V-S defensive zone holding a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Afton, meanwhile, breezed to the finals behind the prolific scoring of senior Jessie Winans. Winans finished with four goals, three in the second half, in a 6-0 shutout victory.
Stacey Guokas put the Crimson Knights on the board tallying unassisted just 1:57 into play.
S-E meets V-V-S in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. today, while the Trojans square up with the Crimson Knights immediately following that contenst for the tourney title.

Nicole Stoddard put a stamp on the win tallying the first two goals of her varsity career in the second half. “(Nicole) is my most improved player, and I’m glad her hard work finally paid off,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie.

NORWICH – Norwich picked up four victories including two of the three relays, but it was not enough to overcome the depth of Union-Endicott’s roster on Friday.
Sara Loomis had a win in the 50-yard freestyle for Norwich, and eighth-grader Erin Gawrowski outdueled two U-E swimmers for her first varsity victory in the 500-yard freestyle. “(Erin) hung with the U-E girls the whole race, and just outtouched them at the wall,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. “The crowd went crazy; it was our best race of the season.”

GREENE – Delhi captured most of the first-place finishes, and edged out Greene for the top spot in the season-opening MAC Relays, Friday at Greene.
The Bulldogs won six of 10 events, Greene took three firsts, and Sherburne-Earlville claimed the other top spot.
“After practicing for a month, we were happy to get into a competitive situation,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We really enjoy these meets because it gives us a snapshot of exactly where we are and who is swimming up to expectations.”
The Trojans open their season at Delhi Tuesday.

NEW BERLIN – Charlotte Valley scored three straight goals after trailing to Unadilla Valley early in the game, and went on to win the New York Pizzeria Tournament title Saturday night.
Jackie Gilley scored the first of her two goals with one second left in the first half giving her club a 2-1 lead.
Gilley would score the initial goal of the second half three minutes into the action after a direct kick.
UV took the lead just over 15 minutes into the game when Amanda Tumilowicz assisted Jordan Anderson. Kate Fagan had UV’s second tally on a direct kick with 29:56 to play.
In the consolation game, G-MU picked up its first win of the season blanking winless Bainbridge-Guilford. Kirsten Gonzalez put the Raiders on the board at 19:33 of the first half, and Kali Murphy tacked on an insurance goal in the second half.
Friday, UV advanced to the finals scoring four times in the first half against B-G. Krystyn Gould scored twice, her first just four minutes into the game on a pass from Fagan. Carly Lorence padded edge just three minutes later. Adding tallies were Anderson and Kara Collins.
B-G’s goals all came in the second half as Randi Conway, Raileigh Hall, and Alyssa Falciana scored.
G-MU dropped a hard-fought battle to defending Section IV, Class D champion Charlotte Valley.
CV broke a 1-1 tied on Sarah Haight’s goal at 27:47. Gilley netted what proved the winning goal 15 minutes later.
Taylor Antczak tied the game for G-MU just five minutes into the second half off a Courtney Hillman pass. Gonzalez scored in the final 10 minutes drawing the Raiders to within one goal.

OXFORD – Greene picked up a third-place finish at the Oxford tournament defeating the host club 3-2 in the consolation game Saturday.
Liz Wentlent, named to the all-tournament team, had two goals for Greene, who led 2-0 at halftime.
Oxford battled back with tallies from Kalah Parks and Julie Heggie.
Watertown IHC won the tournament beating Oxford on Friday, 8-1, and defeating Norwich, 7-0, in the finals.

GREENE – Greene and Afton advanced to the finals of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament winning semifinals games on Saturday.
The Trojans upended Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, a defending Section III champion, 2-0 in the opening contest. Christine Conroe scored at 15:21 of the first half, and Andrea Day added an insurance goal with 10:28 expired in the second half.
The Trojans applied steady pressure in the V-V-S defensive zone holding a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Afton, meanwhile, breezed to the finals behind the prolific scoring of senior Jessie Winans. Winans finished with four goals, three in the second half, in a 6-0 shutout victory.
Stacey Guokas put the Crimson Knights on the board tallying unassisted just 1:57 into play.
S-E meets V-V-S in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. today, while the Trojans square up with the Crimson Knights immediately following that contenst for the tourney title.

OXFORD – Oxford put its first tallies on the board, and beat Delhi Friday for its first win as well.
Lacey Barry scored two goals in the first half helping Oxford to a one-goal lead. Nicole Stoddard put a stamp on the win tallying the first two goals of her varsity career in the second half. “(Nicole) is my most improved player, and I’m glad her hard work finally paid off,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie.

NORWICH – Norwich picked up four victories including two of the three relays, but it was not enough to overcome the depth of Union-Endicott’s roster on Friday.
Sara Loomis had a win in the 50-yard freestyle for Norwich, and eighth-grader Erin Gawrowski outdueled two U-E swimmers for her first varsity victory in the 500-yard freestyle. “(Erin) hung with the U-E girls the whole race, and just outtouched them at the wall,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. “The crowd went crazy; it was our best race of the season.”

GREENE – Delhi captured most of the first-place finishes, and edged out Greene for the top spot in the season-opening MAC Relays, Friday at Greene.
The Bulldogs won six of 10 events, Greene took three firsts, and Sherburne-Earlville claimed the other top spot.
“After practicing for a month, we were happy to get into a competitive situation,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We really enjoy these meets because it gives us a snapshot of exactly where we are and who is swimming up to expectations.”
The Trojans open their season at Delhi Tuesday.
