Big first half carries Greene
SHERBURNE – Greene may have games where it plays better, but it will be tough to outdo its first-half dominance Monday night.
The Trojans scored twice in the opening 30 minutes against Afton, and went on to beat the Crimson Knights, 3-1, in the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament championship game.
Greene had nine shots and 10 penalty corners in the opening half, and had the ball in Afton’s defensive zone most of the last 25 minutes of the half.
“We were very good in the first half,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “I thought we played well in all aspects, we just wanted to guard against their big ball. We had shining moments all over the field.”
The first bright spot came when Andrea Day deflected a pass after a penalty corner just 5 1/2 minutes into the game for the opening tally.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Trojans executed another penalty corner that made it 2-0. Jahna Driscoll sent in the entry pass to Anna Crumb, who swept the ball to Chrissy Conroe for the goal.
“That was a beautiful goal,” Carlin summed up. “It wasn’t really what we drew up, but it worked.”
Afton stepped up its offensive pressure in the second half, but only after it had fallen behind by three goals. Conroe pushed a free hit into the penalty circle to younger sister Emily Conroe, and the younger Conroe sibling ripped the shot into the cage at 28:15.
Afton’s Jessie Winans pushed forward after a Greene turnover breaking up the shutout at 22:13. Greene keeper Devyn Staley needed to make three saves in the second half to keep the margin in check.
“I’m glad (Afton) pushed us in the second half,” Carlin said. “We have a tough schedule this season, and we need to be tested.”
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill scored four goals within a 10-minute span of the first half to oust the host Marauders, 5-0, in the consolation game.
Danielle Brindisi had the game’s first goal at 20:44, and completed the four-goal barrage at 10:49.
