Oxford BOE OKs revival of winter guard

OXFORD – An Oxford alumn received the blessing of the district’s board of education Monday night to revive a club which she said taught her about teamwork and leadership during her years at the school.
Amber Davis, a 2006 graduate of Oxford High School, approached the school board for permission to explore student interest in reactivating winter guard, an indoor color guard activity which she explained combines dance, marching and equipment spinning.
Davis said she does believe sufficient interest already exists in reviving the program. A preliminary sign-up of students in seventh through twelfth grade conducted in June with minimal publicity yielded a dozen names, she explained.
The season typically begins with practice in October, and competitions taking place from January through March, Davis said. Practices would be scheduled at off peak times, so as not to preclude students from their involvement in extracurricular activities or sports.
Start up costs would be minimal, she said, explaining that she was willing to volunteer her time to coach the program. There would be no need to purchase new equipment, as that already owned by the district was still in good condition, and students could fundraise to cover additional expenses.
In fact, the only direct cost to the district would be in transportation, she explained. In the first year, her intention would be to take the team to four competitions in the Mid York district, as well as the championships in March. Those first four events would be in Binghamton, Syracuse, Sherburne and Oneonta, with the final in either Albany or Syracuse. The estimated expense to the district for that travel would be roughly $1,500, according to district Business Manager Harold Covey.
Superintendent Randy Squier said that expense “would be a wash” with what had been already budgeted for the district’s modified soccer program, which was cut because of lack of interest. Based on his recommendation, the board reached consensus to grant Davis permission to proceed with reactivating the winter guard program.
